Condamine Cods is a Rugby Club – but it is also the heart of the community.
Started in 1999 to address a gaping hole in the lives of the young men in the district around the tiny town at the crossroads of the Condamine and Leichhardt Highways, it has grown to embrace the spirit of the bush- to provide support and mateship, a source of laughter and a sharing place for sorrow.
Training sessions, followed by a couple of beers at the Cod Hole, are this district’s version of the Men’s Shed. Cods and Codgers gather to commiserate, exaggerate and generally communicate.
Having appeared in five Grand Finals in two grades in the Darling Downs Rugby Union competition, they also play some serious Rugby.
Annabelle Brayley’s book, Caging Octopuses is a story of ten years of travel, training, tragedy, joy, success, failure and enthusiasm.
In his foreword, John Eales wrote:
“Rugby is but a game, yet it’s so much more than a game, especially when it comes to club Rugby, and even more so when it comes to Rugby in the country.”
